08Mar2018 - Rest day and physio
08th March 2018
In: Running 2018
Since beginning this training program, I haven't been very good at the rest days. I feel I should be doing something if I am going to succeed in the race, even if just weights or slow spin to loosen my legs after the run the day before. But today I had physio at 9am and so would be late to work and decided to have an actual rest day where I don't run or go to the gym.
The physio session was the first one, to try to get to the bottom of why I need to run in a brace - indeed whether I need to, and how I can improve the action of my left leg. I don't use my big toe, which should be the most used toe. We had a very thorough session and it is a complex issue, but one he seemed determined to get to the bottom of. He released many muscles in my left hip, glute and even lower abdomen, which felt very odd. These muscles are inhibiting others from firing when I run, which means I am overusing my calf, tiring it out and making it very tight. Releasing these muscles was step one, but I think there are many more to come. The physio was able to recommend a different brace, which I have now ordered, that should not hurt my ankle bone as much as the A60. He said I could continue with the A60 until the new one arrives. Unfortunately he seemed stumped when it came to figuring out how to fix the position of my foot when I run. When I walked, it was much worse than when I ran - really walking on the outside of my foot, for fear of over pronating. As the insoles didn't work, he will have to come up with a different solution.
I'm optimistic that this is going to help and work and look forward to using the newly released muscles tomorrow.
