Week 11, day 1: Windows and stairs

14th July 2014
There was a couple of big deliveries today - the windows AND the stairs! The windows were meant to be delivered a couple of weeks ago, and the stairs last Friday, but they are at last here.

The first job of the day though, was finishing off the roof. The ridge tiles on the top were finished on Friday morning, but then it started raining, so the builders left at about 10am. Today, the cheeks of the rear dormer were finished off, and aside from the fascia, the roof is pretty much done!

Photos 1-2: The ridge tiles and rear cheeks are finished - smart looking roof we have now!

Photos 3-7: The windows are in, and we are secure once again, from the elements and from unwelcome intruders! Scaffolding apart, the outside is almost there now.

The stairs arrived too late for the old stairs to be taken down and the new ones put up. This was always a possibility today, as the delivery time of the stairs was unknown. So I suggested that rather than wait another day and start afresh tomorrow, they could start and leave us with a ladder if they were not able to finish. And that is exactly what happened.

Photo 8: The old stairs and bannisters are now outside, waiting to be skipped. The purple carpet is no more, and those "designer" bannisters are banished forever from the house! I thought about selling them on eBay, but there is nothing remotely similar being sold currently, so I cannot see them selling at all. I am wondering if the tat man will visit overnight and take them...

Photos 9 and 10: From upstairs, you can see the top of the ladder and the large hole in the floor. Apparently we have to be careful, especially when get up and have sleepy eyes. We do not want to fall down that hole.

Photos 11-13: From downstairs, the house now looks huge, without the stairs. Unfortunately, the new stairs are going to have to go in, but having a wooden bannister is going to make a huge difference, and when we get home tomorrow, the stairs should turn at the top, into what will be the new landing.
