Week 9, day 3: Felted and battened down
02nd July 2014
The builder is currently labourer-less, after the initial one quit last week (after going awol when his hamster passed away), and the new one this week was not really up to the job. Nevertheless, progress is still being made, and potential lads are calling up every day.
After popping in very briefly this morning to finish measuring the roof, the builder left to go shopping for felt, battens and tiles for the side of the dormer windows.
Upon returning from work today, we found that the front half of the extension had been felted and battened! It is water tight!! Hopefully the back half will be done tomorrow, in time for what looks like a very wet weekend ahead.
Photo 1: The roof is now covered in felt (not actually felt these days, more of a membrane). Unfortunately, whereas the tarpaulin had come down in front of the window, providing some shelter and privacy, the felt does not... Our bed is against the front wall, so it can't be seen from outside, but I'm not sure the same will be true when the back is done tomorrow! We might have to put up some temporary curtains - I don't like the idea of neighbours being able to see me sleeping! Also in this photo, you can see that the final trusses have gone up - next to the house. This will also have to be done on the back before the felt can go on. The roof overhanging the dormer window on the front was also trimmed back, as they were quite long. Still think it is a shame that this roof has to be covered up - it is a work of art!
